CHAPTER 9

Darcy was sprawled across the end of the bed in Leslie’s room. The bride, just as exhausted, had collapsed next to her.

“Just a few more hours and we’ll be married, and Roberto and I can hightail it away to the Tuscan countryside, just the two of us. I think it’s going to take me at least a week to recover from all this insanity.” Leslie stirred the air with a finger as though her arms were too tired to raise.

“I can understand why. Do they do this same thing at Christmas?”

“No. It will be just Roberto’s immediate family for all but weddings and funerals.”

Including sisters and brothers, that was still sixteen people. “Once you’re married, you and Roberto can sneak away and claim married bliss has kept you in hiding while you practice making babies.”

Leslie laughed. “His mother’s already asking when we’ll start trying.”

“Don’t let anyone rush you, Leslie. Enjoy each other for as long as you both feel you want or need to.”

“We will. I’m not in any hurry. I still have plenty of time.” Leslie rolled onto her side, and with a fingertip, flicked Darcy’s hair out of one eye. “Why don’t you move here and work, Darcy? I want you to be here with me when I go through pregnancy and all that. You’ll be his or her aunt and godmother.”

“I want to be here when you have all your babies so I can be their aunt and godmother, so I’ll make you a deal. I’ll look into what it takes to be licensed to practice here in Italy.” But she had to follow through with Tony first.

She rolled onto her back and stared at wooden beams that crossed the high ceiling. “Mom has a new family. You’re my sister of the heart. I love your folks, and I love Roberto.”

“And Italian men are very passionate.”

“And very chauvinistic.”

“Yes. But Roberto isn’t like that. You can find one who isn’t like that, too.”

She hoped he didn’t revert back to typical Italian behavior. It was part culture, part upbringing, and part religious belief about where women fit into their society.

“You remember that guy who snapped his fingers at you on your first date?” Leslie asked.

Heat rose in Darcy’s face from just the memory. “Our only date. Any time I wasn’t walking fast enough to suit him he’d snap his fingers to get me to walk faster. All I could think about all night was, I bet he does the same thing in bed.”

Leslie laughed. “Oh, my God! You never told me that part.”

Darcy grinned. “If I told you every snarky thought I had about the men I meet, we’d never talk about anything else.”

“Any snarky things you want to tell me about any of my soon-to-be brothers-in-law, since they were all so taken with you tonight?”

“That was a competition thing, not real interest. If they knew the real me, they’d run in the other direction. They’ll all want an old-fashioned Italian girl who isn’t interested in working outside the home.
